I originally had no intention of adopting a cat... but I love kitties and often toyed with the idea of adopting. A friend of mine who is heavily involved in cat adoptions for Lucky Dog proposed a great idea – cat fostering! I'd get to play and cuddle with cute little fluffballs while not having to commit long term. I received my first foster kittens shortly thereafter – a brown tabby with white feet (Boots) and a talkative black and white kitten with an adorable black patch on his nose (Boogie). The two were best friends and sprinted through my house chasing and playing with each other and just generally being super cute.
That next weekend was their first adoption event, and I received a text that Boots was adopted. Hooray! But, I instantly became worried that Boogie wouldn't find a forever home and would be lonely in my house without his buddy. Sadly, the cute little Boogie Monster (as I affectionately started calling him) was not adopted that weekend and wandered my house loudly meowing in search of his friend. It was heartbreaking, but I just spent more time with him and gave him extra love. With each week and adoption event a strange thing started happening... it got harder and harder to drop him off at the events.
After about 5 weeks of fostering I had to go out of town and informed my coordinator that Boogie would need alternate housing. I dropped him off at a local pet store willing to temporarily board him, but then had an attack of nervousness – how upset would I be if Boogie was adopted while I was out of town? How much would I miss him? The answers to those questions drove me to promptly write my coordinator asking if I could adopt the little Boogie Monster and give him a forever home when I returned from my trip. I just grew too attached to that cute little face! Scouser (his new name) is now a permanent part of my household. Overall, I'd say my first foray into fostering was successful... but I bet that was Lucky Dog's master plan all along! And I'm happy it worked.
