My journey into rescue began a few years after my family moved to the United States. As my children grew up, I noticed that I had more and more free time … and I wanted to spend it in a meaningful way. I asked my friends, and one of them told me that she adopted her dog “Batman” from Lucky Dog Animal Rescue. She described the screening process she had to go to, and how impressed she was that the animals were all residing in foster homes.
I was fascinated! We don’t have this kind of program in Belgium, and I wanted to learn more. I reached out to Lucky Dog, and soon I was approved to be cat foster!
Fostering was great! We were able to help so many cats and kittens grow more confident, healthy and strong, and were able to share our insights with their forever families. My whole family got involved – picking up the fosters, bringing them to events, etc.
Fostering was very rewarding, but after a year I realized that I wanted to have an even bigger impact on the lives of cats in need. That’s when I decided to become an adoption coordinator for Lucky Dog.
Now I guide people through Lucky Dog’s cat adoption process from start to finish. It’s fun to help people find their perfect match, and it’s even better to know that you found a warm home for these sweet cats and kittens. The picture after the adoption when you see a cat or kitten in their forever home gives you the best feeling – it is the reason why I volunteer with Lucky Dog.
